Dynamical Systems to Machine Learning and Quantum Computing

Abstract: The central question of my talk is what can the mathematics of dynamical systems theory and complex systems theory tell us about machine learning and future quantum computing? The primary tool I will use to study this exchange in the reservoir computer (RC). RCs provide a useful paradigm for studying both dynamical systems and recurrent neural networks. They are random recurrent dyna...

mAI for Dynamical Systems Biology

Abstract: The recent development of high-throughput omics technologies has provided unprecedented big data support for life science research. Biomedical data from multiple sources, dimensions, and scales constitute typical multi-source heterogeneous big data, exhibiting significant spatiotemporal dynamic characteristics. In response to this feature, there is an urgent need to develop a system o...

Multiple wave scattering, Bloch waves and metamaterials

Abstract:I will give an introduction to the field of metamaterials, which are composites that harness resonant microstructures elements to generate dynamic properties not found in natural materials, such as negative refraction and invisibility cloaking. I will take a multiple wave scattering approach to the design of metamaterials, which connects with the theory of Bloch waves. I will finish by...

Universality for Monotone Cellular Automata

Abstract:In this talk I will discuss a monotone version of the Ising model on Z^d, in which sites update from 0 to 1 (but not in the other direction) according to an arbitrary monotone, homogeneous, finite-range update rule. It turns out that these models can be partitioned into d+1 universality classes, which are characterised by their behaviour on sparse random sets. More precisely, if sites ...

The mathematical Paleocene

Abstract:The current AI pandemonium is forcing mathematicians to revise assumptions about our profession which were taken for granted, from the meaning of doing mathematics, to how the assessment system should work, to the role of mathematicians in society. I will share some thoughts on those topics and leave room for discussions.Bio:After finishing PhD in Princeton, I did a postdoc in UC Berke...
