Abstract:

I will review some of the remarkable connections, proved and conjectured, between, on the one hand, properties of the Riemann zeta-function and its zeros, and, on the other hand, random matrices and their eigenvalues.  I will also discuss some implications for the distribution of prime numbers.

Bio:

Jon Keating studied at the University of Oxford and did a PhD at the University of Bristol.  He is the Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Oxford.  Established in 1619, this is Oxford's oldest scientific chair.   He is a former President of the London Mathematical Society and in 2009 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, where he is currently a Vice-President and the Treasurer.  In 2009 he was awarded the Fröhlich Prize.
