Moduli spaces and modular forms

Instructor:Gerard van der Geer (University of Amsterdam)
Schedule:Tues. & Thur., 13:30-15:05, Oct. 8-Nov. 24, 2026
Venue:Offline; C654, Shuangqing Complex Building A
Date:2026-10-08~2026-11-24

Lecturer: Gerard van der Geer
Fields of research: Algebraic geometry, modular forms

Description:
Both concepts, moduli spaces and modular forms, were formulated in the 19th century and became prominent in the second half of the 20th century. The course will advocate a geometric approach to modular forms using the geometry of moduli spaces to produce modular forms and uncover their fascinating properties. The main cases are the moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties and Siegel modular forms but other moduli spaces, like those of curves, will be treated. We will discuss several open problems and promising research areas.

Reference: Literature will be given at the course.

Target audience: Graduate students
