Lectures on the moduli space of abelian varieties

Speaker:Gerard van der Geer (University of Amsterdam)
Schedule:Tues. & Thur.,13:30-15:05, Sept. 5-Oct. 24, 2024
Venue:Lecture Hall C548, Tsinghua University Shuangqing Complex Building A
Date:2024-09-05~2024-10-24

Note:

Sept. 15-17: Mid-Autumn Festival

Oct. 1-7: National Day Holiday

The lectures on Sept. 17 and Oct. 3 will be cancelled.  The lecture on Oct. 1 will be adjusted to Sept. 29.

Description:
The topic is A_g, the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g. Few objects in algebraic geometry have such a rich structure, connecting geometry, analysis and number theory. The lectures aim to give an introduction and a survey. Topics include construction and basic properties, compactifications, the cohomology, stratifications, Kodaira dimension and relations with modular forms. We also intend to touch recent results on the cohomology, Chow rings, compact subvarieties and characteristic p aspects.

Prerequisites:

Some acquaintance with moduli of elliptic curves is useful, but not necessary.  Familiarity with basic notions in algebraic geometry is assumed.

References to the literature will be given at the beginning and during the course.

Bio:
Gerard van der Geer is professor emeritus at the University of Amsterdam He works in algebraic geometry and arithmetic geometry with emphasis on moduli spaces and modular forms. He worked on Hilbert modular surfaces, curves over finite fields, cycle classes on moduli of abelian varieties and on modular forms. He got a honorary doctorate of the University of Stockholm.
