The class field theory says that the abelization of the Weil group of the function field of an algebraic curve over a finite field is isomorphic to the idele class group. We prove this by geometric method using generalized Jacobians. We essentially follow Serre’s book “Algebraic groups and class fields”, except that we use Grothendieck’s style algebraic geometry instead of Weil’s.
