Finding its origins in the study of negatively charged electric particles repelling each other while constrained in a given domain, potential theory has evolved into a sophisticated field of analysis, with far reaching connections to complex and arithmetic geometry. This talk will be a gentle introduction to some basic features of this theory, with a few hints to more recent developments.
Sebastien Boucksom is a French mathematician specializing in complex and non-Archimedean geometry. After defending his PhD thesis in 2002 under the supervision of Jean-Pierre Demailly, he became a CNRS Junior Researcher at the Institut de Mathematiques de Jussieu in 2003, and has been a CNRS Senior Researcher at the Ecole Polytechnique since 2014, where he also holds a part-time Professor position. He was an invited speaker at the 2018 ICM in Rio.
