Classical representation theory studies representations of, for example, groups and algebras by linear operators. Higher representation theory is a modern "upgrade" of the classical representation theory. It studies representations of 2-categories by functors and natural transformations. In this talk I will try to survey the history of higher representation theory and outline some of its achievements and challenges.

Volodymyr Mazorchuk is a Ukrainian-Swedish mathematician at Uppsala University and was awarded the Goran Gustafsson Prize in 2016. His main research areas are: Representation theory, Lie algebras and Semigroups.
A Goran Gustafsson Prize is a national Swedish prize for outstanding scientific achievement awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Chemistry, Mathematics, Medicine, Molecular Biology and Physics. It was created by means of a donation from Swedish businessman Goran Gustafsson and amounts to about 150,000 USD as a research grant and 15,000 USD as a private bonus.
