I will start by tracing out the evolution from Riemann's uniformization theorem to the theory of quasiconformal mappings and to that of Lipschitz mappings between hyperbolic surfaces developed by Thurston, leading to new metric theories of Teichmueller space. I will then present the current work and some open problems in this area.
