We shall study infinite dimensional Lie algebras and superalgebras, and their quantum deformations, starting from basic definitions, basic properties, and statements of classifications. We shall concentrate on affine Lie algebras, their root systems, Weyl group, etc. Then we shall try to relate these to current studies of Hecke algebras, familiar from number theory, by representation theoretic techniques.


Prerequisite: We shall try to keep prerequisites to minimum. Some familiarity with the classical theory of Lie Algebras, such as the book of James Humphreys, or with algebraic groups, would help, but is not strictly necessary.
