数学科学中心作为开放性的数学交流与合作中心,其发展势必需要国际化的合作作为其有力支撑和发展动力。数学中心非常清楚地认识到国际合作在人才培养、科学研究等方面的重要作用和影响。在过去的几年中,中心与一些国际知名高校的数学院所建立了合作伙伴关系,在科研、人才培养和教学等方面进行了广泛而深入的交流与合作。在丘教授的直接推动下,数学中心近期与美国哈佛大学数学科学系达成了合作协议,又与斯坦福大学理学院成功签订了院系合作协议。这是中心在国际合作方面迈出的坚实有力的一步。此外,中心与英国剑桥大学下属的三个数学研究机构达成协议,共同搭建合作平台,促进彼此发展。

为响应教育部“高等学校创新能力提升计划”(简称“2011计划”)的广泛实施和开展,数学科学中心希望寻求更为广泛而深入的国内外合作,希望在加强自身建设和发展的基础上,共同促进和推动国内整个数学学科综合实力的提升。目前,清华大学数学科学中心和数学科学系已与中科院数学与系统科学研究院、中山大学数学科学学院进行了多次前期沟通和交流,并联合香港中文大学、台湾大学、台湾交通大学、哈佛大学、斯坦福大学、剑桥大学、芝加哥大学、哥伦比亚大学等,共同搭建数学科学的交流平台,通过该平台进一步加强国内、港台及国际数学界的学术交流与合作、探讨各个领域的最新研究成果。基于前沿硏究的发展及各自对年青人的培养计划,探讨双边或多边的合作形式及方案,为学术研究和人才培养创新思路。与此同时,希望通过著名高校、科研院所以及国际知名学术机构的强强联合,在高水平人才培养和进一步提升数学科学水平方面发挥重要作用。

基于这一背景,由清华大学数学科学中心和数学科学系牵头,以清华大学,中国科学院数学与系统科学研究院,中山大学三家为核心单位,定于2013年5月29日召开“国际合作,协同创新”会议。现已邀请了一大批国内外数学科研院所及兄弟院校的代表和著名数学家赴会,他们来自中科院数学与系统科学研究院、中山大学、台湾大学、台湾交通大学、香港中文大学、台湾理论科学研究中心、美国哈佛大学、斯坦福大学、英国剑桥大学等学术机构。届时会议将围绕平台建设、学科规划及人才培养等方面进行具体的商讨和规划,并完成国际院校合作协议的签订。

Collaboration is essential for scientific inquiries. It is also crucial for mathematical research. It is true that mathematical discoveries are done by individuals or by a small team of researchers. However, their works are not done in isolation. Major mathematical discoveries are based on the works of many mathematicians and inspired by the exchange of ideas in academic activities such as seminars, workshops and conferences. Collaboration is most effective if conducted with the best in the world. To be a premier mathematical center in the world, Tsinghua is committed to close cooperation with the best in the world.

In mathematics, the key word for excellence is innovation. Mathematical works are judged by whether it contains new results, new techniques, new ideas, new directions, and new connections. The mathematics programs at Tsinghua will be judged by the mathematical innovations that emerged directly or indirectly.

MSC and the Department have already achieved initial successes in its striving of excellence in mathematics through international collaborations. To continue in this path and to achieve greater successes, platforms for international collaborations have to be established. The establishment of Tsinghua Sanya International Mathematics Forum (TSIMF) in 2010 is one of the strategic moves in the pursuit of excellence through international collaborations. TSIMF, located in Sanya, is intended to be an international conference center in mathematics. It is the first of its kind in Asia. To facilitate the cross fertilization of different fields, TSIMF can hold two workshops side by side. The construction of the conference center and supporting facilities will be completed by September this year and TSIMF will be in full operation by the end of this year.

The other strategic move is to form a platform with premier mathematics from the Mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and all over the world for collaborations in research and nurturing of young talents. It aims to facilitate participating institutes to freely join hand to focus on targeted problems and areas, and to offer novel education and exchange opportunities to students and young mathematicians. Tsinghua University, the Chinese Academy of Science and Sun Yat-Sen University will be the core members of this platform. With the support and participation of Tsinghua's international partners, the establishment of this platform will enhance participating institutes’ capacity to advance mathematical innovation at its highest level and to educate and produce the next generation of academic leaders. This platform will benefit the advancement of mathematical science worldwide.
